Sofia Zaruchas
2024 EAGLE Student
Hi, I’m Sofia. I grew up in Paderborn, Germany and moved to Hannover for my Bachelor’s degree in Geography. Although I didn’t expect it at first, I developed a strong interest in remote sensing there, especially in urban environments.
During my internship at the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs, and Spatial Development in Bonn, I first learned about the EAGLE program and immediately knew that I wanted to apply. I am particularly interested in climate change mitigation and adaptation in urban areas and believe that remote sensing can make a significant contribution in this field (e.g., detecting urban heat islands, assessing the impact of heavy rainfall, monitoring traffic emissions, analyzing green spaces, and more).
Since sustainability is also a key topic in my personal life, and I love spending time in nature, I am also interested in the impact of climate change on other ecosystems, especially polar and coastal regions. My professional and personal motivation is to protect ecosystems and ensure that, despite climate change, they remain livable spaces for plants, animals, and people.
In my free time, I practice contemporary dance, knitting, and enjoy the cultural offerings of the city I currently live in (right now, that’s Würzburg). In summer, I love having picnics with friends. I am also currently looking for an urban gardening project to join—who knows, maybe that will become my next passion!
