Marine Lefranc

2024 EAGLE Student

Hello, I’m Marine from France. For the past five years, I lived in Brittany, a region known for its rugged coastlines, storms, and of course, its Kouign-Amann (and perhaps its rainfall, though that’s a touchy subject!).

After completing my Bachelor’s in Geography, I joined the European Institute for Marine Studies (IUEM) in Brest to pursue a Master’s degree in Coastal Sciences and Management. Living so close to the coast has deepened my desire to understand how it functions, its stakeholders, and the many critical challenges it faces—especially in today’s rapidly changing world. For my Master’s thesis, I worked with a PhD student at IUEM’s Geography Lab. The project focused on using remote sensing to monitor the evolution of coastal wetlands in the Audierne Bay (Finistère) through Machine and Deep Learning algorithms. I was fortunate to work with SPOT satellite images, a family of French satellites known for their high spatial resolution, which is especially suited for observing coastal ecosystems.

Spending time walking along the coastline, learning to surf, and meeting people passionate about the sea, inspired me to dedicate my future career to the protection and understanding of coastal and oceanic spaces.

The EAGLE Master’s program allows me to specialize in geospatial sciences, and to acquire technical skills (programming, GIS) that will enable me to work on coastal risk monitoring (erosion, coastal flooding), marine habitat studies, and marine pollution tracking.

I’m also taking advantage of my time in Würzburg to improve my German, a language I truly enjoy, and to continue listening to plenty of electronic music!
