2024 EAGLE Student

Hi, I’m Mahnoor. I grew up in Pakistan. Due to my father’s job, we moved to a new city every two years. This constant change was one of the most exciting parts of my childhood, as it allowed me to experience different places, cultures, and perspectives from an early age.

I completed my bachelor’s degree in Space Sciences with a major in GIS and Remote Sensing at the Institute of Space Technology, Pakistan. My undergraduate thesis focused on radio signal propagation using 3D city models from satellite imagery. Afterward, I interned at SUPARCO, gaining hands-on remote sensing experience.

I then pursued a master’s degree in GIS and Remote Sensing at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Pakistan. My master’s thesis, “Semi-Automated Processing Chain for OBIA Classification Combined with Spectral Unmixing Using Medium Resolution Images,” focused on developing a machine learning-based open-source tool. I later worked as a Geoscience Intern at UNDP (New York Office), focusing on satellite imagery analysis using Pythona and ML.

I am particularly passionate about risk and disaster management. Natural disasters have far-reaching impacts on communities, infrastructure, and economies, and I am fascinated by how remote sensing and geospatial technology can be used to predict, mitigate, and manage these risks.

Although I already hold a master’s degree, I was drawn to the EAGLE program because of its strong international exposure and industry relevance. Also, I felt the need to refine my skills, especially when it comes to programming. Since joining, I’ve realized that there is so much to learn, and I am truly enjoying the experience.

I aim to continue working in disaster management, applying remote sensing for disaster response and mitigation. While I plan to pursue a Ph.D., I first want to gain industry experience and work on practical challenges.

In my free time, I enjoy reality TV, long walks on sunny days, and spending time with animals. I also like cooking when the mood strikes. Gloomy weather? Not a fan!
