Lutz Kleemann
2024 EAGLE Student
Heyy, I’m Lutz 🙂 I grew up in a town close to Mainz and studied Geography at Ruprecht-Karls-
University in Heidelberg. During my studies I developed a strong interest in GIS, especially remote
sensing. After listening to an introductory lecture on remote sensing I decided to teach myself
coding and quickly fell down the Python rabbit hole. An internship at the German Aerospace Center
really helped shape my direction. It gave me a deeper look into remote sensing and made me realize
how much I enjoy working with satellite data.
I chose the EAGLE program because it offers a lot of methodological training and covers a broad
range of environmental applications. That mix really appealed to me and I felt like it was the perfect
next step after my bachelor’s and the experience I gained during my internship.
In the future I would love to contribute in monitoring and quantifying Global Change particularly
on cryosphere related topics. I’m especially drawn to mountain environments and would like to
combine my academic interests with personal ones wherever possible.
Outside of university I usually spend my winters skiing as much as possible. I work as a ski
instructor and am always on the lookout for some fresh powder. Besides that, I always enjoy
reading, doing sports and catching up with friends.
